| About the Kaisenhama Futon Taiko |
The Kaisenhama Futon Taiko is one of Sakai’s traditional “Sakai-style Futon Taiko” festival floats dedicated to the Hassaku Festival of Sugawara Shrine in Sakai City. Believed to have been crafted in 1909, it is a historic cultural treasure. Standing approximately 4 meters tall and weighing around 2 tons, the float is carried by about 60 participants during festival processions. Adorned with elaborate gold-thread embroidery and ornate decorations, the Futon Daiko is valued not only as a symbol of festival culture but also as an expression of the craftsmanship and design traditions passed down through generations in Sakai. During the exhibition, visitors can also enjoy videos of the actual festival, offering a glimpse into the vibrant traditions that continue to thrive in Sakai. |
Sakai Cultural Experience is a cultural project dedicated to sharing Sakai’s rich local heritage and traditional culture with visitors from Japan and around the world.
As one of its representative initiatives, this exhibition introduces the Kaisenhama Futon Taiko, a symbol of Sakai’s enduring festival culture.
Featuring magnificent gold-thread embroidery and vibrant decorative elements, the Futon Taiko represents not only the city’s festival traditions but also its long-standing craftsmanship and artistic design culture.
Sakai’s Futon Taiko tradition has also been showcased internationally through occasions such as the G7 Osaka–Sakai Trade Ministers’ Meeting and is widely recognized as one of the city’s most iconic cultural symbols.
